Silakkasoutu Raises Funds for WWF Finland’s Wetland Work
The traditional charity event Silakkasoutu and -patikka, held in Helsinki, will this year expand its focus from the Baltic Sea to inland water protection. The proceeds from the event will be donated to WWF Finland’s work on wetland construction. Wetlands play a crucial role in combating eutrophication in the Baltic Sea and in safeguarding biodiversity.
Now organized for the 14th time, the Rotary-led Silakkasoutu and -patikka once again brings together people, companies, and communities in a relaxed spirit to do good. The event will take place alongside the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Wetlands Are Nature’s Own “Sponges”
Funds raised through Silakkasoutu support WWF Finland’s efforts to build so-called multifunctional wetlands in agricultural and forestry environments. These sites reduce the amount of nutrients washing into waterways, increase biodiversity, enhance landscapes, and improve recreational value.
Wetlands will also be increasingly important in the future, as climate change is expected to bring more rainfall and flooding. According to WWF Finland Secretary General Jari Luukkonen, wetlands are natural treasure troves that provide habitats for many species.
“They also combat eutrophication by absorbing nutrients and retaining water like a sponge. By building and restoring wetlands, we help not only the Baltic Sea but also rivers and lakes,” Luukkonen explains.
At best, a well-functioning wetland can retain up to 90 percent of the soil matter and the nutrients bound to it that are carried by water.
Rotarians Have Contributed for Over a Decade
Environmental protection is one of Rotary’s key focus areas, and Silakkasoutu has been organized since 2013. Through the event, approximately €100,000 has already been donated to support the Baltic Sea.
“The Baltic Sea is close to the hearts of many Rotarians. We want to do our part and help it in different ways. That’s why this year we are donating the event’s proceeds to WWF Finland’s wetland work,” says Markku Tahkokorpi, Chair of the Silakkasoutu Steering Group from the Meri-Espoo Rotary Club.
Join Us for Rowing or Walking
Silakkasoutu offers a suitable way for everyone to participate. You can choose between:
• Church boat rowing from Kaisaniemi Bay to the Katajanokka guest harbor (MarinaBay)
• The Silakkapatikka walk along beautiful seaside routes to Katajanokka Pier
After the outdoor activity, participants can enjoy a shared herring lunch. A concise Baltic Sea seminar will also provide an opportunity to hear more about wetlands and their remarkable benefits from experts at WWF Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute.
“In Silakkasoutu, team spirit grows while we work together in a positive atmosphere for a healthier Baltic Sea,” Tahkokorpi sums up.
