Rowing for the Baltic Sea 2025

The Rotarians invite you to save the Baltic Sea and refresh yourself!

Baltic Herring row (Silakkasoutu) for the benefit of clean local waters and the Baltic Sea was rowed by church boats in Helsinki on the opening day of the Herring Market, Sunday 5th of October 2025. Rowing for Baltic Herring event has been organized from 2013 and it has raised over 90 000 euros for the Baltic Sea.

Alongside the rowing event, there was an alternative activity: the Herring Hike, a 4-kilometer walk along the shores of central Helsinki.

All people, companies and communities are being challenged. Baltic Herring rowing is a relaxed and physical recreational event. It’s a great opportunity to strengthen the team spirit as well as contribute to a better tomorrow for the surrounding society.

Theme for 2025: Better Safe Than Sorry – Helping the Baltic Sea Prepare!

The Baltic Sea is a sensitive and difficult-to-navigate marine area where oil spills can cause long-lasting and severe environmental damage. The proceeds from the Herring Rowing event was donated to WWF’s oil spill response work. WWF's oil spill response teams consist of trained volunteers who assist authorities in post-spill cleanup and in caring for oil-affected animals. The rapid spread of oil and the difficulty of collecting it from the shoreline highlight the importance of quick response efforts. The teams operate independently under the supervision of the authorities and regularly participate in training to continuously improve preparedness.
